Lil Nas X, 7 EP, EP Review

Lil Nas X
7 EP
EP Review

The year of 2019 has presented us with quite a few innovative underdogs, but arguably the most prevalent of them all, is Lil Nas X.

Responsible for one of the biggest guilty pleasure track of the entire year so far, Nas X quickly rose to fame with the unique blend of country and trap in the form of "Old Town Road". Part of me wishes that this track wasn't so overplayed, as it truly stands as an incredibly catchy bop (especially the remix with Billy-Ray Cyrus).

My assumption was that "Old Town Road" was all that Nas X felt like he needed to leave his mark on 2019. However, I was pleased to find this EP, dropped by Nas X this Friday.

While there was an evident amount of excitement, I was also a tiny bit worried before listening to this EP, as I wasn't sure just how much Nas X was going to push the whole country-trap aesthetic; was it going to become a bit of a gimmick on this EP? Well thankfully, my worry towards this new EP was all in vain.

While there are a few other tracks on here that still have that country aesthetic, there aren't any tracks that feel like blatant copy-pastes of "Old Town Road". Instead, every song is unique, with some of them being a lot more futuristic in their sound.

I was also impressed with how generous this EP is its tracks. The title "7" most likely refers to the total of 7 tracks (technically 8 if you count the original "Old Town Road" and the remix as separate tracks). I would say that this EP almost qualifies as an album.

As well as the sprinkling of country on this EP, there is a high level of authenticity to the production. The beats in many cases, are acoustic, and along with Nas X's vocals, sounds very similar to a Kid Cudi record.

While I've only started listening to this EP today, I can already start raving about the tracks. All of them seem like they serve a purpose on the album, and at the moment, I love them all.

In particular, I really like "Rodeo", which in some ways reminds me of a grittier and darker "Old Town Road". The feature from Cardi B also adds a surprisingly enjoyable twist to the cut too.

Another noteworthy track on this is "C7osure (You Like)" with its incredibly laid-back piano melody in its production. I have a feeling that this is going to be an essential chill-out tune with some inspiring lyrics.

In conclusion, it is clearly evident that Lil Nas X knew exactly what he was doing with this effort. It's a wonderful blend of classic and current sounds, and it is by far my favourite EP of 2019 so far. I hope that Nas X can continue being the innovative artist that he currently is.
