Janelle Monae, Dirty Computer, Mini Review

Janelle Monae
Dirty Computer
Mini Review

Despite being her fourth studio album, 2018's "Dirty Computer" is my introduction to the artist. I was almost unfortunate enough to miss it completely, but after revisiting a number of albums including this one, it became incredibly easy to see why this album had received such high praise.

In terms of tracks, this album is a musical fruit-punch blend of hip-hop and indie pop. The overall atmosphere created by the music is as warm and as colourful as its album cover. There are feelings and emotions that certainly come through clearly on this album and for the most part it's very empowering as the general theme of the album is embracing what makes you different in what Monae describes as "Bugs" (relating back to the whole "Computer" ideology presented in the albums title), and I really like that! Its an album that feels very aware of the current issues and taboos that a lot of people face in modern day society and offering a bit of a resolve. In short, it's a feel good collection of all different flavours of pop.

Favourite song: "Django Jane"

While there are many more pop-influenced tracks that I enjoy on this album, I can't deny that the more Hip-Hop inspired "Django Jane" could give Tyler the Creator a run for his money. There are some very clever bars that flow incredibly well with the bass-boosted beat. It's just a real banger and currently my favourite track amongst many other great songs.

Thank you for reading,

Booth Boy
